New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields joined the 7-on-7 drills at training camp on Saturday, just two days after suffering a dislocated toe 49jilicom. Fields demonstrated his passing skills during the quarterback positional drills and later in a session alongside wide receivers, impressively throwing a perfectly placed deep ball to Tyler Johnson for a significant gain that elicited cheers from the crowd.
Despite his participation in the drills, Fields did not take part in team drills and will continue to undergo daily evaluations. “Just trying to ease him in,” coach Aaron Glenn explained. The Jets have their first day off from practice on Sunday. “I thought he did a good job in 7-on-7s,” Glenn remarked about Fields. “The truth is, he still has a way to go before we get him back out there, and we’re committed to ensuring we maintain the process and keep to the protocol to make sure he’s ready.”
Fields caused quite a stir among fans and on social media on Thursday when he dislocated a toe on his right foot early in practice. He was carted off the field to the facility, where he underwent multiple tests before the team confirmed the diagnosis, alleviating concerns of a potentially more severe injury.
On Friday, Fields observed practice from the sidelines while wearing his helmet, but by Saturday, he had made enough progress to participate in some of the drills. Glenn expressed confidence that Fields, who is expected to be the starter in his first season with the Jets, won’t fall behind due to the injury. “He’s going to be just fine,” the coach stated. “He missed one day, but he’s been in meetings, so he’ll be all set.” Meanwhile, backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor continues to lead the offense during Fields’ absence.
Tackling the Issues
While Fields received enthusiastic cheers for his practice involvement, a new addition to the drills also excited fans and players alike. Glenn initiated a tackling drill where an offensive player faced off against a defensive player in a 1-on-1 scenario sarina bolden goal. The offensive player attempted to evade the defensive player, who aimed to stop him by wrapping him up.
This drill wasn’t full tackling — no pads were used yet — but it’s one that Glenn introduced during organized team activities, having brought it over from his coaching tenure in Detroit. “I modified it a little bit to fit my vision,” he said. “I love the drill. It gets the players excited. It provides a chance to teach and work on critical tackling skills as well as offensive players’ ability to evade defenders in open space.”
The Jets’ defense struggled last season with missed open-field tackles. The loudest cheers of the day erupted when cornerback Sauce Gardner matched up against wide receiver Garrett Wilson, successfully forcing him out of bounds, prompting wild celebrations from the defense. pba opening 2024 “This league is about making open-field tackles,” Glenn commented. “We all know it’s a spacious league right now. The more tackles we can make in open space, the better our team will perform.”
